So I have a couple pictures in the Extras section right now. I hope you guys enjoy them! I like drawing non-sequential stuff. I'm not sure if I should put the actual comics in on the front page or just have the out of the timeline stuff in the Extras page. I'll probably just put them in the extras page so you have to search to find the gold on the side of the site. Some of it might not be the best quality because I'll scan it in and fix it up a bit but, still, it's a scan with a $20 scanner/printer. And feel free to give suggestions for pictures you'd like to see. I enjoy drawing and like being given challenges! Also, if anyone wants to send any fanart in (I can be hopeful...) then feel free to send it to kala1090@yahoo.com and specify if you want your name (or a pen name) attached to it. I just hope everyone's liking the comic so far. My hopes of drawing like a maniac over the winter break has turned into a sleep until forever and update like regular on Tuesdays type deal. So sorry, still once a week updates.
As in any dialectic relationship, there are opposites. You cannot have the good without the bad.
First, drawing characters so they look the same. I still have trouble doing this. You have to draw the character a lot before it gets any easier. It's just... difficult... Sometimes I draw Robyn's chin too angled or Garrett's nose is a bit far down but the result looks good so I'm torn between erasing it and making the face conform or leaving it looking good how it is.
Next, it takes a lot of time!! I never fully realize this until I've spent a whole day drawing and I've gotten three comics done. Only three!! Not colored, just drawn! So time consuming! I've only drawn one comic since the semester started! I don't have any time...
What really gets me it when I just want a comic to be DONE so I find myself doing a crappy job. I'm pretty sure I got so fed up this summer from day after day of drawing that one of the comics is ENTIRELY STICK FIGURES. I apologize in advance for this. But I've already drawn them once and it would just be drawing people in the same poses for a lot of the time so... I just thought "screw it." I get lazy sometimes and I don't draw fingers. My biggest annoyance. I like to draw hands but they take a lot of time and who cares if you can discern fingers when someone just has their hands to their side??
Figuing out how to pose your characters in natural but interesting (not "oh, her hand is backward" but interesting to you, the reader) ways. I move a lot when I talk and I try to emulate those movements in my characters. You have to keep it in character though. There's a character coming up who isn't very expressive for a while. So you have to know the charaters. Which, you know, is I guess easy since they're mine but...
Probably more, but that sounds about right for complaints.
Here are the upsides:
Every time I draw a comic it's like I made a present for myself that I can go back and look at and smile, laugh, and be amazed at. Sometimes I draw things and think they're fantastic then forget about them so when I go back shuffling though my multitude of comics I find that amazing piece and I get impressed with my past self for doing such a great job! Good job past self!
My imagination is the limit. I wanna draw someone with five heads on a floating motorcyle in space? Done. Stories can be so much more expansive and expressive with comics. You not only get the visual but you also get the dialogue to go along with it. I took a class called Picturing Stories and it was meant to help you create a story with just images and no words. It was only a freshman seminar so I didn't really get much out of it but the concepts were good. I always found myself wanting to add words, though. I'm just a wordy person. I'm obsessed with conversation and the amazing thing is that it's not only done with words. The pictures help so much. Don't get my wrong, I love reading novels and I can imagine someone "scowling intensely" but it heightens the impact when you actually see the scowl.
It's fun! I don't mind wasting a day drawing. I put in a movie, sit on the couch with my raggedy old clipboard and start drawing. Animated movies are the best to draw with. I'll imitate something I just saw and learn from it.
And that's another cool thing, you're always learning and improving. I can't teach someone how to draw, I just can't. I can teach you how I draw, sure, but drawing is something you need to find for yourself. "But Sarah, how do you 'find' drawing?" you may ask. Well, what artists do you like? How do you want to draw? Personally I like drawing people both in my own style and realistically. If I want to draw someone realistically I get a friend to sit for me for half an hour. Usually I'll give them the picture because I don't want to be weird, but I've learned something. I learned how to draw that person. If I want to improve my own style then I emulate other artists whose style I like. Other webcomics are great examples. As is probably evident, I started by drawing anime characters. It was a start. I also used to draw people without noses. I didn't like how they looked. Then I realized how weird people looked without noses and I gave in and gave people noses.
I'll end there with noses.
So I suppose I shall use this blog to vent/rant/explode with joy about drawing in general and drawing comics. I might give you some more insight to me and the characters and how I get ideas.
I'll start by saying that I am almost constantly thinking about my comic characters, especially Garrett and Robyn. They are never far from the front of my mind. I'll be in a car ride and think about how cool it would be draw a comic about Garrett and Robyn having a picnic in the field I just saw. Things like that. Also, I am my biggest fan. I draw fan art for myself (more on this in the next post). I think it makes sense. I mean, I know them best, right?
So I have, at this time, 54 comics redrawn with my tablet (a long laborious project that was mostly accomplished this past summer and I'm trying to finish up during the semester which is proving quite difficult) and only 4 more comics to redraw! So, let's use some math kids, that's 58 comics done! That's a lot of story! Almost 60 pages worth! So yeah, if you stick around there will be some quality entertainment that was mostly born from when I was in 11th grade then edited and improved over this summer. The drawing quality gets better, I swear... I just didn't want to go through the effort of redrawing the stuff I had already redrawn preiously when I wasn't as well versed with my tablet. If anyone has the opportunity to use a tablet and you are mainly a pencil or pen and paper kind of person, I highly suggest you give it a long and hard try. Also try it if, you know, you're more artsy than me. It's not for everyone because it's hard to drawn on your lap or table then see it appear on the screen but you get used to it and it becomes second nature. I use a tablet with a built in screen at work and I much prefer my regular tablet. It has more precision and my hand doesn't get in the way when I'm drawing!!! IT'S THE BEST!!! No smuges, shadows, or hand in the way...ness... with a tablet! My tablet is a Wacom Intuos 3 6x8 that I got a few years ago. There are better ones out but mine works fantastic so who cares.
-cough- Sorry 'bout that. So yeah! This comic is set up for a good while! I would LOVE to do more than one update a week but I would run out of comics too fast. I have tons of extra comics that I can upload every so often and I intend to do that. But... you need to know more about the characters for them to make any sense so you'll have to wait. My apologies.
Thank you for reading my comic!
